The year 2020 is one we will not soon forget.

Not only did the world descend into a life-altering global pandemic, but the US became the epicenter of a racial reckoning ignited by the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, among others. Despite the emergence of these traumatic events, 2020 also allowed us to witness the kindness, empathy and selflessness demonstrated by helping professionals worldwide. We in the coaching profession were among those contributing to positively transforming the countless lives of people attempting to navigate the day-to-day uncertainty of their lives.

During this interactive presentation, participants will learn about the growing social impact coaching movement and how it is changing the coaching profession and the world. Coaches will learn how they can become involved in the movement. In addition, participants will be introduced to the Racial Just Us Coaching for Community Antiracism Series and learn how this innovative social impact coaching initiative helps clients examine core beliefs about race and racism.

Participants will also learn why the Coaching for Community Antiracism Series rejects traditional, outdated diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) training approaches to instead focus on helping clients produce their own individualized antiracism action plan capable of creating meaningful change in their personal lives, workplaces and communities. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A session for participants.

Utilizing my formal coach training and facilitation skills developed through 8 years in my role as a clinical training specialist, I developed a group coaching program specifically designed to support Child Protective Investigators within the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families. I also provide group coaching through the Racial Just Us’ Coaching for Community Anti-racism Series which coaches participants in their quest to create individualized anti-racism action plans.

About the Speaker: André M. Brown

André M. Brown is an African American male who has had a lifetime of personally experiencing individual, institutional and structural racism. He earned an MS degree in Human Development and Family Studies and is also an International Coaching Federation (ICF) certified coach. He spent over two decades working multiple roles within the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (RIDCYF). Most recently André served as a Clinical Training Specialist where he trained new hires and veteran Social Caseworkers and Child Protective Investigators to effectively serve children and families opened to the Department. In his role, he developed and facilitated several trainings including Cultural Competence in Child Welfare Through Self-Awareness I: The Impact of Implicit Bias and Understanding and Implementing Cultural Competence. In addition, André developed and coordinated the Child Protective Investigators’ team coaching program.

In late 2019, he left RIDCYF and relocated to Miami, Florida. In 2020, He founded Racial Just Us, an agency whose primary mission is to provide diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) focused coaching, consulting, training, facilitation and public speaking services. André developed the Coaching for Community Antiracism Series as a way to help participants create individualized antiracism action plans to affect change in themselves, workplaces and communities.
