What Does The Client REALLY Want? How To Get An Agreement That Ensures A Successful Session

One of the most difficult skills of coaches is turning the topic or problem into a clear desired outcome for the session, and then monitoring if the outcome shifts or changes during the conversation. If this outcome isn’t defined, there is no solid framework for growth. Clients might enjoy the conversation, but they probably won’t change much in the future. The coaching agreement is the foundation for creating mental and life shifts. However, this Is not an easy process as clients struggle to say what they really want. How can you bring this picture forward? After a brief review of tips, pitfalls, and “how to” suggestions, participants will watch a demonstration and discuss it so they can apply it for themselves when they coach.

OBJECTIVES

  • Discover the importance and ways you can shift your clients from focusing on the external problem to defining what the client can change or create instead.
  • Perform three steps in mental preparation to increase presence and more effectively coach even when emotions and distractions emerge.
  • Use reflective techniques as well as powerful questions to “vertically coach” deeper to define the outcome and what is keeping clients from moving forward.
  • After observing a coaching demonstration, participate in an interactive Q&A session to explore ways of integrating the learning into your own coaching practice.

COMPETENCIES

CC2. Embodies a Coaching Mindset – How to mentally prepare for sessions and regulate emotions and reactions during the sessions.

CC3. Establishes & Maintains Agreements – How to create a clear picture of what the client wants to change or create, why this is important now, and what needs to be addressed or resolved to achieve their desires.

CC4. Cultivates Trust & Safety – To coach deeply to define desires and blocks, the client’s needs to feel safe enough to trust the coach and process. This session looks at how to establish and maintain psychological safety.

CC5. Maintains Presence – Clients often resist what they haven’t yet fully articulated. We will explore how the coach can stay present, curious, and caring no matter what emerges.

CC6. Listens Actively – This process includes listening for key words and noticing expressions that when reflected, will help the client think more clearly and broadly for themselves.

CC7. Evokes Awareness – In order for there to be a powerful awareness, there must be a clear agreement on the desired outcome. The awareness must relate to the clear outcome to ensure relevancy and growth.

CC8. Facilitates Client Growth – As with the awareness, a commitment to action must relate to the agreement to ensure growth.
