Evokes Awareness: Direct Communication as a Coaching Move
Direct communication is an important part of coaching and is often misunderstood. The core competency "evokes awareness" contains three important concepts that relate to direct communication. Participants will identify these concepts and discuss and practice how to effectively use them with their clients.
Using three aspects of the core competency "Evokes Awareness”,
- Challenges the client to evoke awareness or insight
- Notices what is working to enhance client progress
- Shares observations, insights and feelings, without attachment, that have the potential to create new learning for the client,
Participants will discuss and share strategies using direct communication as a coaching move.

About the Speaker: Pat Mathews, MCC
Pat is President of Mathews Associates, a coaching and consulting practice dedicated to supporting leaders as they build productive partnerships, teams and workplaces located in West Palm Beach, FL. She is an RN and holds a Masters degree in Health Administration. She also holds a leadership coaching certificate from Georgetown University (2001) and is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) with the International Coaching Federation. She served as chair of the ICF Global Credentialing and Program Accreditation committee. She served on the ICF Global Board of Directors (now the ICF Professional Coaches Board) for 5 years and as Vice Chair in 2016. She is currently chair of the ICF Global Enterprise Board. Pat received the ICF Global President’s Award in 2013 and was inducted into the ICF Circle of Distinction in 2019. Pat is a founding faculty member of the Institute for Transformational Leadership and the former program director of the Leadership Coaching program at Georgetown University.. She is proficient in the use of assessments, including the Leadership Circle 360 and Trimetrix and is a Certified Professional Behavior Analyst and a Certified Professional Values Analyst. Pat is the co-author of Professional Coaching Competencies: The Complete Guide, 2018 as well as several other publications.
