When the Coach’s Schema Walks In: Staying Present When Your Own Patterns Get Triggered
Every coach knows the moment: a client says something, and suddenly you are rushing to help, proving your value, or steering away from discomfort. Presence slips, and the client's thinking slows down with it.
In this interactive workshop, Master Certified Coach and coaching supervisor Daniela Aneva shows how the coach's own schemas, the deep patterns formed long before we became coaches, quietly interfere with the ICF Core Competencies. Through a live coaching demonstration, real-time commentary on the PCC markers and small-group practice, you will learn to recognize your personal triggers, catch them mid-session and return to full partnership with your client.
You will leave with:
- A map of the four schemas that most often hijack coaching presence
- A simple "notice, name, return" reset you can use in your very next session
- Reflective questions that strengthen trust, listening and evoking awareness
- Ideal for ACC, PCC and MCC coaches who want to coach with more freedom and less self-interference.
Learning Objectives tied to Core Competencies
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Identify four coach schemas (approval-seeking, rescuing, perfectionism, conflict avoidance) and the specific PCC markers each one puts at risk.
- Recognize in real time the moment their own pattern pulls them out of presence and into telling, fixing or avoiding.
- Apply a three-step "notice, name, return" reset to restore presence and partnership within the session.
- Use reflective questions after sessions to strengthen ongoing self-awareness and coaching mastery.
Subjects covered:
what schemas are and how they show up in the coach; the four common patterns; a live coaching demonstration with marker-by-marker commentary; group debrief; breakout practice of the reset with peer feedback; a personal reflective-practice plan.
Core Competencies applied:
Embodies a Coaching Mindset (self-awareness and reflective practice); Cultivates Trust and Safety; Maintains Presence; Listens Actively; Evokes Awareness.
Evidence against the three criteria:
- Coach-specific: the content addresses the coach's own internal process during live coaching sessions, not leadership, therapy or business topics.
- Related to the Core Competencies: every segment is anchored in named competencies and PCC markers, and the demo is debriefed marker by marker.
- Develops skills for client work: participants practice the reset in breakouts with real coaching scenarios and leave with a tool for their next client session.
