Link VP DEIB July 2023
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
It’s officially summer!
Which means it’s time for summer fun, food, family, and friends—but July is also Disability Pride Month. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 or ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
As we enjoy our summer activities let’s not lose sight of the decades-long fight that resulted in the passage of the ADA. I highly recommend watching two Sundance Film Festival award-winning documentaries. The first, Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution follows a group of young civil rights activists from their time together at a summer camp for disabled teens to the signing of the ADA. You can view it
here.
The second documentary, I Didn't See You There is shot from the point of view of Reid Davenport, a wheelchair bound man who has cerebral palsy. You can find it on PBS’s POV series.
See the trailer here.
