Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

By embracing these observances, we have the opportunity to enrich our coaching practices and foster a deeper sense of understanding and empathy. Let's consider incorporating discussions and activities that highlight these significant causes into our coaching sessions. We can encourage dialogue about Black History Month by exploring the contributions of Black leaders in our fields and reflecting on their impact. For American Heart Month, we might focus on the intersection of physical and mental well-being, emphasizing the importance of holistic health. Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month could prompt us to discuss healthy relationship dynamics and effective communication strategies with our clients.

Additionally, Ethnic Equality Month invites us to explore cultural appreciation and equity, perhaps by sharing personal stories and experiences that celebrate diversity. As coaches, these conversations can inspire transformative growth, both personally and professionally.

Together, let’s commit to creating a coaching environment that is not only inclusive but also actively celebrates the rich tapestry of humanity. By doing so, we not only honor these vital themes but also empower our clients to carry forward the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in their own lives and communities.

Book recommendation of the month

Leading with Cultural Humility: 12 Inclusive Practices to Manage Biases, Promote Equity, and Cultivate Cultures of Belonging
by Lyna Nyamwaya

We have already spent millions of dollars on diversity, equity, and inclusion work. What else do we need to do to make it work? Drawing from her journey as an international student to more than 20 years of nursing, education, nonprofit, and entrepreneurial leadership experience, Lyna Nyamwaya shares Leading with Cultural Humility. When we lead with a cultural humility approach, instead of saying, "I treat people how I like to be treated," we ask people how they would like to be treated, and then we treat them as such. This avoids assumptions and focuses on meeting the needs of those we serve. The 12 mistakes we make as leaders and the inclusive practices we can use to remedy them are not exhaustive. This book offers leaders a diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) resource to navigate real-life challenges, manage biases, improve communication, and cultivate cultures of belonging. By creating inclusive cultures, we will find equity, accountability, respect, fairness, and growth that make marginalized and minoritized people feel safe, secure, and supported. Whether you are a leader in the boardroom, classroom, breakout room, or any room, use these applicable practices to create a positive impact, save millions of dollars, and leave people feeling seen, heard, and valued.
