3 Winning Strategies for Influence in Fortune 500 Companies by Ellin Sidell

3 Winning Strategies for Influence in Fortune 500 Companies

The summer after graduating college my corporate career was just beginning. I was bright eyed and eager to make a positive difference in the world. If you had asked my younger self to imagine that a few decades later I would be introducing the CEO of the 12th largest company to the entire corporate campus at an event for a program I had founded, I would have been inspired. Fast forward over three decades I discovered Dr. Cialdini’s book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. While reading, I had an epiphany. Over decades of working in corporate America I had become proficient in applying these principles through trial and error. If only someone had taught them to me earlier on, I can only imagine what I could have achieved. My gift to you is to share the following stories in the hope you can apply them similarly. Getting a Yes from others can help you achieve remarkable results in your career and life too. I want to go back to that bright eyed young woman to tell her the key to her success would be to apply Dr. Cialdini’s seven influence principles, and in doing so, she would gain her voice. Even in large Fortune 500 companies with rigid processes I shared my ideas, got people on board, and made real change. I helped grow multi-billion-dollar brands by applying these principles to the three strategies of partnership, mentorship, and sponsorship of which you will read about in the following pages. Whether you are a professional or a manager at any level in an organization up to the C-Suite, I hope you find value in these stories of the ethical application of influence to drive growth in your teams and organizations.
